Interview of Hans Ibing about his experiences in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. He came to Canada from Germany in 1930. He lived in Winnipeg until 1936 and worked as a farmhand and then got a job in the city. He faced a lack of job opportunities in Canada. He had an idea of what was happening in Germany and said the reason he went to Spain was that he was against Fascism. The anti-Fascist movement in Canada was building up support to send people to fight in Spain. He was provided with transportation from Winnipeg to New York, and from there sailed to France with more than 100 men. At that time a number of organizations were sending men to fight in Spain, including German organizations, Scandinavian organizations and Slavic organizations. In the early spring he crossed the Pyrenées, travelled to Toulouse, took a bus into the mountains and met some 30 other men in a park, most of them English-speaking. He travelled to Barcelona and then to Albacete, where he volunteered as a truck driver attached to a transport regiment with the Fifth Army. Ibing also mentions the role of the Spanish Communist Party. He also describes transporting men and supplies to the Brunete front but he was never involved in front line action. The recording slows down at this point to near-inaudibility and later reverts to correct speed. At the time King George visited Paris, Ibing was interned as a foreigner and sent to Limoges. He returned to Paris where he was told to leave the country in two days. He had difficulty getting the necessary papers but managed to return to Canada after being away for two years. On his return to Canada he had to pass an immigration examination.
