This film introduces the viewer to many places of interest in Yorkshire and the Lakes District of England. From King's Cross Station in London, the journey takes "The Flying Scotsman" to York, "the most historic city in England". Here, the viewer is shown the city's narrow streets; Walmgate Bar, one of the ancient gates; York Minster, founded in A.D. 627; nearby ruins of abbeys and castles; and antiquities such as the oldes chemist shop in England, est. 1720, and the oldest pack of hounds in England. After showing some of Yorkshire's famous rosebushes, the journey continues to Scarborough, "the Queen of Watering Places," where many people are seen along the seashore. After many scenes of the amusements here, the viewer is shown Harrogate, "The Famous English Spa" situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors. An intertitle enumerates the great number of dales and valleys, ancient castle ruins, monastic buildings, stately homes, famous battlefields, and old Roman camps within fifty miles of the city. A variety of views of this countryside are followed by shots of the ruins of the Fountains Abbey. In Knaresborough are the Dropping Well and a chapel set in the rock which are shown in detail. Shots of the surrounding country show the Rivers Wharfe and Nidd, and the valleys of the same names. The final section of the film shows a group of climbers on a trip in the Lakes District. They are shown on their way to the "Great Gable" and then ascending a tall rock. Two intertitles read, "The North of England may easily be reached from Liverpool or Glasgow - to which Cunard and Anchor-Donaldson liners sail weekly from Montreal and Quebec during the St. Lawrence season". <14mn 30s>

1. Although this film appears in OMPB catalogues in 1933, not long after the trip to England in 1930 during which the HIGHWAYS AND BYWAYS OF ENLGAND series was filmed, it is unclear how much of it is from original footage. The intertitles in the Lakes District section suggest that another film MOUNTEERING IN LAKELAND, by Gaumont Mirror, has been inserted in its entirety.~2. Other evidence, such as the eclectic intertitles, would support the conclusion that this film is compiled from a number of different sources.~3. Some parts of this film appear to have been hand tinted in a previous version.
