The painting was been attributed to Gilbert Stuart Newton by the donor, however; this has not been substantiated.

The oil painting was originally considerably larger. It was cut down to its present dimensions some years before it was photographed in 1952.

The oil painting of Colin Robertson was acquired by the National Archives in 1958
(1958-186-1).
There is a second, very similar oil portrait in LAC's collection that was acquired in 1959 (Accession no.: 1959-019).
In 1952 the National Archives acquired a photographic negative and copy print of the oil portrait of Colin Robertson (Accession no.: 1952-049). Both negative and copy print are located in the Robertson portrait file 211-6-1. Copy negative: C-008984.
