See acc. no. 1991-265-181X., John Webber was the official artist for James Cook's Third Voyage (1776-1780) from the South Seas to the West Coast of North America. This image appears in the book of plates, companion to the second edition of the Journal of Captain Cook and James King, A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean...three volumes (I and II by Cook, III by King), published in 1785 by William Strahan in New Street, Shoe Lane and Thomas Cadell in the Strand, London, England. Printed by H. Hughes. This image is plate number 22., Walking in a line with small poles on their shoulders, the natives of the Friendly Islands perform a ceremony in honour of the King's son. The small pieces of sticks, fastened to two poles, are yams (Volume I of III, p.340). In the middle of this large group some native men are erecting a shed.
