Television public affairs program. Mary Lou Finlay takes a look at Newfoundland's fishing industry and talks to the President of the Newfoundland Fishermen's Union, Richard Cashan. Plagued by problems, both internal and external, the industry is facing critical times and Cashan, a lawyer and former Liberal Party MP, provides an overview of the situation as he sees it. Despite efforts of the Newfoundland government and recent Federal legislation establishing a 200 mile limit off the coast of Newfoundland, fish stocks are rapidly being depleted by off-shore foreign fleets. Canadian fisheries inspectors are shown aboard a Spanish fishing trawler operating illegally in Canadian waters; the International Commission on North American Fisheries is seen in session in Ottawa; local fishermen express their views; and clips of a fishermen's strike in 1971 in the town of Burgeo show the part unionization has played in improving the lot of Newfoundland fishermen. <30mn>
