Recherche dans la collection - Hudson's Bay Company Medal Commemorating the Centennial of George Simpson's Arrival at Fort St. James

Fort St. James (B.C.) was founded as a fur trade post in 1806 by Simon Fraser of the North West Company (NWC). The post, on the south-eastern shore of Stuart Lake was originally called the Sturgeon Lake Post. It was built by the NWC's Metis employees. The Sturgeon Lake Post was renamed Stuart Lake Post in honour of John Stuart of the NWC. In 1821, after the amalgamation with the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) the name was again changed to Fort Saint James. Under the HBC, the fort was its administration centre for northern and central British Columbia, then called New Caledonia.
