It is thought this painting was made around the time that the Buffalo and Lake Huron opened in Goderich. It must be noted that the railway was not completed at the time of the opening.
The steamer depicted in this painting is most likely the Kaloolah which was built in Buffalo in 1852. By 1853 the Kaloolah was owned by Vanevery and Rumball of Goderich, and it transported passengers and freight until it was wrecked on August 22, 1862. While attempting to aid another vessel, the Sir Charles Napier, the Kaloolah was driven ashore during a gale and ultimately broken up on the beach.
