A look at the daycare scene in the Ottawa region and the recent Regional Task Force Report on "Day Care. A focus on the progressive and comprehensive Swedish system of child care: the trained teachers and nurses; low child-staff ratios; parental involvement; and after school recreational activities. It is administered by local government but set up by the central government. Footage of Sweden; child care centres; and children themselves. The results of a cross-country survey of the day care picture in Canada: the differing provincial jurisdictions on day care; and maps and graphics. The Regional "Day Care Task Force Report, "Day Care: Today, Tomorrow", was submitted to the Social and Health Policy Committee on March 17 at a public meeting. Sixty-one recommendations are made, revolving around the basic issue that day care should be universal, educative, and developmental rather than custodial. Task Force Chairman, Ross Langtry opens the meeting. Rolf Hasenack, Regional Social and Health Policy Chairman, shares his view on the report. Dick Stewartin is in charge of day care at Regional Social Services and discusses space and budget recommendations. Jean Sutton of the Regional "Day Care Advisory Committee talks about the value of developmental day care. Regional Chairman,, Andy Haydon, points out that the whole meeting is a philosophical discussion while Ottawa alderman Toddy Kehoe and Dick Stewart discuss how realistic the regional budget is. Jamie Cass of the Centretown Parents "Day Care reflects on day care, job ghettoization and the salaries of teachers. Dave Hagerman of the Glebe "Day Care Centre states that the middle class is squeezed out of the public day care system. Finally, Haydon says the focus should be on space increase, not salaries. Interviews on reactions to the meeting follow: Ross Langtry; Jean Sutton; Eleanor Benesch, director of the Children's Centre; alderman Jacqueline Holzman; and Andy Haydon.~Charlotte Birchard is chairperson of the Ottawa Day Care Advisory Committee, also known as Grande Dame of day care in Ottawa.
