A fictional story that could have inspired the painting "A Young Painter" formerly attributed to Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669). THE YOUNG PAINTER is set in the present. Roland West (Pierre Gendron) is a young painter living and working in a studio on Long Island while recovering from the effects of service in World War I. Before the narrative begins the film shows reproductions of two paintings. The first is of Rembrandt van Rijn’s "Self-Portrait at the Age of 34". The second is of a canvas then titled "A Young Painter" and is both the painting that the film’s title refers to, and the work that inspires the young painter in the film. He has even done a reproduction of it for himself. (At the time the film was made "A Young Painter" was attributed to Rembrandt and had been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, from 1909 to 1917. It is no longer considered to be a Rembrandt. In the present owner’s catalogue it is attributed to Samuel van Hoogstraten, a pupil of Rembrandt.) ~Roland meets Helen Seymour (Mary Astor), a local girl from a rich family, and agrees to give her sketching lessons. Charles Courtleigh, his closest friend, with whom he was first at Yale and then in the same army unit, arrives on the scene. Charles and Helen have been friends since childhood. The sketching lessons abruptly end and Roland, realizing his friend is in love with Helen, sends her a brief note of goodbye and disappears, secreting himself in a studio in New York’s Greenwich Village.~There he takes in a homeless street urchin, Billy. Charles promises Helen that he will find Roland but it takes him all winter. By spring, when he finds him, far from recovering, Roland has become much sicker from grief and a broken spirit. Charles takes Helen to him but it is too late to save him. Roland wishes the couple happiness, asks them not to forget Billy, and dies holding Helen in his arms. His death is signaled by the appearance of the ghost of Rembrandt. Roland rises from his bed, in double exposure, and is lead out of the frame by Rembrandt. <24mn>
