In eighteenth century Italy a master violin maker's daughter (Mary Pickford) is courted by two of his apprentices, one the better craftsman (David Miles), the other more handsome (Owen Moore) and preferred by the girl. A competition is announced - a sign reading "Gold chain to the maker of the best violin among the apprentices of the town of Cremona" is shown - and the father throws in the hand of his daughter for good measure. Miles, realizing that the girl does not love him, switches his violin for that of Moore. Moore, determined to win at all costs, unwittingly switches the violins back. During the judging Moore confesses his deed to Miles who in turn tells what he has done. Miles is declared the winner but when he is repulsed by the girl he smashes his violin and places the gold chain around his rivals neck. He then propels the girl into Moores arms and as they embrace he picks up a handkerchief she has dropped. After breathing deeply of its perfume he hurries away to the solitude of his room. <9mn 56s>
