Interview by Raymond Stone with General Ramsey-Withers, Commander of the Canadian Forces North, who discusses the objectives of the military in the North, namely to protect Canadian sovereignty and promote development; search and rescue; provide civil and emergency training of civilians; and maintain national security. He describes the mix of activities involved with the job of military commander of the north, including hosting visitors; travelling to outlying bases; and coordination with the Commissioner. He talks about the military involvement with Inuit people and the 50~ increase in Native cadet enrollment. Other topics include the establishment of the first northern national cadet camp, the military social life, and morale and future developments in the north. In part two, the General describes the attributes of the North that attract visitors and tourists to the Arctic - its wilderness, beauty, riot of colour, the mountains, MacKenzie Basin, the hospitality of its people, the solitude, and the outdoor sports. <30mn>
