Silent footage of members of the Toronto Arts and Letters Club, as follows:~Men standing with other, yelling, laughing and singing; men singing; a man drinking and eating a hot dog; a man in costume and make-up; men in various costumes; figure skating by women and a man; an ice skating show; actors performing skits, including an impersonation of Adolf Hitler and a depiction of Uncle Sam; men in various costumes; men dressed as women; and men performing skits on stage.~Leader reads: "The Arts and Letters Club - Toronto" followed by the following:~Reginald Stewart conducting; Monro Grier reading from a paper on stage; Ernest Morgan reading from a book on stage; Dr. Fricker playing piano; Jack Ridpath carving wood; Barker Fairley talking to the camera; Mrs. Webster carving a roast; Viggo Kihl playing piano; a man reading Saturday Night magazine; B.K. 1. Listed in kinescope inventory record as Mathew's (sic) Collection.~2. The CBC Kinescope Inventory Record instructs that the CBC Arts and Sciences Department be notified of any requests for this footage, but the rights to this material are held by the estate of Chuck Matthews, who died in 1990, represented by his son Graham Matthews (see related footage in the Arts and Letters Club fonds).~3. The Arts and Letters Club requests that it be contacted for permission to use this footage.~4. The Arts and Letters Club was founded in Toronto in 1908 an association for male musicians, artists, and others participating in the arts or as patrons of the arts.~5. The club hosted poet Rupert Brooke in July 1913.~6. It had a prominent role in fostering the work of the Group of Seven, holding an exhibition of J.E.H. MacDonald's work in 1911, Tom Thomson's work in 1915, and the Group of Seven in 1920.~7. Its February 1927 exhibition of paintings by Bertram Brooker was the first exhibition of abstract art in Canada.~8. It started putting on annual springtime drama revues in 1930 and performed plays by Merrill Dennison and John Coulter.~9. Its first club house was the Assizes Building, formely the Court House, on Adelaide Street. It moved in 1920 to St. George's Hall at 14 Elm Street.~10. Among its members over the years have seen Hector Charlesworth, Bertram Brookers, and Lovat Dickson.
