NATO's Standing Naval Force Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT) was approved by the Council in December 1967. The Force was commissioned at Portland, United Kingdom in Januarty 1968. It is the first permanent, multinational naval squadron to operate in peacetime.~STANAVFORLANT is composed of ships provided by NATO navys which normally operate in the Atlantic.~Flying the NATO flag, this squadron of destroyer or frigate class ships carries out exercises and manoeuvers the year round. By rotating the ships composing the unit, the national naval forces contributing to STANAVFORLANT gain useful experience in working as a multinational team, in command and control procedures, communications, surveillance, as well as tactics and operations.~This force has a capacity for rapid deployment to a threatened area in times of crisis or tension.~Footage shows: the Dutch destroyer Zeeland D809; the British frigate Argonaut F56; the American destroyer Glennan 840; the West German destroyer Bayern D183; two destroyers seen over the front of a third ship; the Commodore; three destroyers against the light of the sky; a map of the Atlantic Ocean with a shot of the area around Iceland on which two white arrows appear; a Soviet electronic intelligence trawler; a Soviet Kotlin-class destroyer with a US helicopter hovering in the foreground; a aircraft carrier and a Soviet destroyer; a Soviet ship shadowing an American destroyer intercut by the NATO flag; a sailor signaling; a destroyer giving lamp signals to a ship in the foreground with a third ship in the background; a sailor signaling with an insignia on his right arm; ship radar turning; mortars fired from a ship and the effect of dropping in the sea and exploding; the transport of personnel from the Zeeland to the Argonaut by jackstay; a helicopter taking off from the Argonaut and pulling up personnel from the deck; the support ship Provider of the Canadian Armed Forces unloading fresh stores on board other ships at sea; the refuelling at sea of the Glennan by the British tanker Alwyn; shooting over of line and connecting of hose; the radio controlled anti-submarine helicopter Dash on board the Glennan; Dash in the air with a flag; destroyer signaling by lamp; sailors sightseeing and welcomed by dancing girls in port; map of the Atlantic Ocean with animation indicating route; the four ships - Dutch, British, German and American - anchored side by side; visitors around a signboard STANAVFORLANT - NATO; flags of the seven nations - Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the UK, the US - who have served with the squadron; the Bayern leaving port and firing a salvo in salute; and the three warships - Dutch, British and American - in formation. <5mn 54s>
