Nessa married Nathan but has never felt love for him. Instead, she loves Philipp. Early in their lives the sons, Ernest and David, come to take their mother's side against their father. The father, despite his infidelities, loves Nessa very much. Nessa tells Nathan that she has never loved him and is leaving him for Phillip, whom she does love. He believes that deep down, she really does love him, for love is the whole value of his life. The sons choose to remain with Nathan who continually begs his wife to return. But one day he comes to realize that Nessa never has loved him. His purpose in life his gone and he has a fatal heart attack, but only after completing a poem that he had begun long before: "Dumb, I sing of love". <1h>
