CBC television news special on the summit in Versailles of the G-7 industrialized nations, the United States, Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy, Japan and West Germany.~Peter Mansbridge leads off with comments that the international economic picture is bleak and there is no plan by governments to help. Next are visuals of Ronald Reagan, François Mitterand and Pierre Trudeau. Mansbridge and David Halton discuss the proceedings at the conference, remarking that the leaders did not seem to propose any solutions.~Mike Duffy reports on the economic situation in the various G-7 countries, mentioning American interest rates and Japanese trade policy. There are visuals of the Venice summit, a clip of Trudeau at Venice, visuals of Montebello, a clip of Jerry Jordan about unemployment, and a clip of Ed Lumley and Nachiro Amaya.~Mansbridge and Duffy discuss Canada's federal economic approach, which appears to involve no change in policy, no new spending programs, no cuts, no change in instructions to the Bank of Canada, and no more money for job creation. There will probably be federal wage restrictions for public servants and the government will leave job creation to the private sector.~Joe Schlesinger reports on Ronald Reagan at the economic summit, his change in attitude which is illustrated by his willingness to negotiate disarmament with the Soviets without pre-conditions, and talk of charging the Soviets higher interest rates over a gas pipeline project.~David Halton reports on the economic policy of the Mitterand government and the economic situation in France, which is characterized by labour unrest, high prices, inflation, and the drying up of business.~Duffy reports on the news media at the summit and how the politicians have used the summit as a good opportunity to meet face to face and build relationships.~Next is an interview of Prime Minister Trudeau, who talks about unemployment, the need to fight inflation, the impact of American interest rates, the need to be more realistic about expectations of economic growth, and about voluntary wage restraints. Mansbridge and Halton talk about governments in trouble because of the economic problems and labour militancy. Mansbridge then closes the program by stating that there has been no good news at this summit and the economic news could get worse by the time of the next summit.
