CKLW radio news excerpts on the energy crisis in United States and in Canada, focusing mainly on the city of Detroit and the greater state of Michigan. Various reports, interviews and commentaries include President Richard Nixon's address from the White House in which he announces the appointment of an energy emergency action group and the first nationwide conservation measures to meet the energy shortage; Prime Minister Trudeau's statement in which he assures Canadians of adequate oil supplies and urges them to follow the voluntary conservation program; an excerpt from "Canada Now" on energy politics in Canada; interview with representatives of the Office of Coal Research in West Virginia on research efforts to develop technology to increase the use of coal to meet the nation's growing energy demands.~Other aspects of the crisis are discussed including the implications of conservation measures on Michigan's tourism and recreation industry; the effect of the Arab oil embargo on European and African countries; the difficulties in transporting Alberta crude oil to Eastern Canada by way of the Panama canal; the escalation of world oil prices; the development of alternative sources of energy and relevant new technology; and Canada's export controls on energy products flowing to the United States. <5h>
