The fonds documents Victor J. Mackie's work in journalism with the Regina Leader-Post and Winnipeg Free Press, especially his coverage of provincial politics in Saskatchewan in the 1940s and federal politics in Ottawa from the 1950s to the 1980s. As a confidante of leading politicians and other influential figures, Mackie's correspondence, confidential memoranda, and manuscripts provide a reporter's inside view of Parliament Hill during the years between the St. Laurent and Trudeau governments. His records furnish valuable evidence of the role of journalism in the regional politics of western Canada and the editorial policies of the Winnipeg Free Press.

Mackie, Victor, 1916-1992 : Victor John Mackie was born 12 February 1916 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, to Scottish immigrant parents. He received a high school education in Moose Jaw and joined the Moose Jaw Times-Herald in 1935 as a cub reporter, covering politics and the local beat. Declared medically unfit for the armed forces at the outbreak of war, Mackie won a job in 1941 with the Regina Leader-Post covering city hall and provincial politics. In this capacity, he covered the rise of Tommy Douglas and the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation in Saskatchewan in the 1940s for the pro-Liberal Sifton family newspaper.

Having attracted favorable notice for his political reporting in Regina, he moved to the Winnipeg Free Press in 1948, the "flagship" of the Sifton family chain of newspapers. After brief stints as assistant news editor and covering the provincial legislature, Mackie moved permanently to Ottawa in 1951 to join the Parliamentary Press Bureau. He stayed in Ottawa reporting on Parliament Hill for the Winnipeg Free Press until his mandatory retirement at the age of 65 in 1981. As Ottawa correspondent, Mackie was the eyes and ears of the editor and publisher of the Free Press, the voice of Liberalism in western Canada. In this role, he prepared confidential weekly memoranda on the happenings on the hill for the editor and publisher. Not intended for publication, the Free Press used these "Ottawa notes" to set the editorial direction of the newspaper, write informed editorials, and keep in touch with the latest developments in Ottawa. Mackie also served in a variety of offices in the executive of the Parliamentary Press Gallery.

After his official retirement in 1981, Mackie continued to do freelance work and write his weekly Ottawa letter discussing developments on Parliament Hill for a short, select list of clients which included Ken Thomson and John Turner. Mackie had married Jean Ross of Moose Jaw in 1941. She died in 1991. Victor Mackie died 20 December 1992.
