In 1996, original unedited footage of the laying of the TAT-1 across Newfoundland, filmed by Bernard Ash in 1956, was loaned to John Griffiths by the late Bernard Ash's duaghter, Jean Butler, with the intention that a permanent record of the footage be made. Griffiths then edited the footage and added narration. He then transferred the film to video. The videocassette copy was then given to Donard de Cogan of the University of East Anglia, friend to John Griffiths, who transferred the video from PAL to NTSC. In late 1996, the NTSC videocassette copy was sent to Alan Ruffman, President of Geomarine Associates Ltd., by Donard de Cogan with the intention that it be recopied and distributed to repositories that might wish to accession the material. The videocassette was then offered to the National Archives of Canada by Ruffman, acting on behalf of de Cogan, in August of 1999.
