The fonds contains records pertaining to the musical activities of Gaston Allaire: curriculum vitae; correspondence (George Rochberg, Auguste Descarries, Joseph Barone, Egon Kenton, Armen Carapetyan, J.-L. Baudouin, Christian Berger, André de Quadros); writings (doctoral thesis and articles); manuscripts and copies of compositions and arrangements by Gaston Allaire; concert programmes; diplomas; contract; press releases; press clippings; photographs of Gaston Allaire and others musicians including Auguste Descarries (with dedication), Leonard Bernstein, Jacques Ibert, Claude Létourneau et Fernand Gratton; pencil drawing by Ben Kamihira of the tenor René Bouchard accompanied on the piano by Gaston Allaire; sound recordings of works by Gaston Allaire and other composers.

Allaire, Gaston, 1916- : In 1918 the Allaire family left the United States and settled in Danville, Quebec, where Gaston Allaire began music studies. He attended numerous music institutions between 1934 and 1960, including the Conservatoire national de musique du Québec, the University of Connecticut and Boston University, where he submitted his doctoral dissertation on The Masses of Claudin de Sermisy. Various scholarships allowed him to do research in musicology in Europe and the United States. A professor at Loyola College in Montréal (1962-67), the Université de Montréal (1966-67) and the University of Moncton starting in 1967, he was also appointed a research officer between 1969 and 1973 at the University of Moncton. Compositions by Gaston Allaire include music for organ, motets, a prelude and fugue for string orchestra, a Suite laurentienne for orchestra and a polyphonic mass.
