Fonds consists of biographical material on J.W. Howard, his publications and talks. His work for the United Nations, Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation Centre in Montreal and Mahoney, Leblanc & Howard. Howard's correspondence with British and Canadian psychologists, 1970-1983. Material on Howard's work for Canadian and British military personnel selection, 1941-1946. Data, response analysis, correspondence, manuals and a book on the Howard Ink Blot Test, 1953-1966.

Howard, James W, 1899-1987 : James Willis Howard was born in Orangeville, Ont. on 29 June 1899. He received a BA from the University of Toronto in 1923 and a PhD from Cornell University in 1936. He was an educational psychologist at the Belleville Collegiate Institute, 1926-40. Howard was an officer in the Active Militia and took the Army Senior Staff Course in 1938. During the Second World War, he served as an Army Officer seconded from Royal Canadian Armoured Corps for staff duties. Howard was Assistant Adjutant General at Canadian Military H.Q. (Overseas) where he was in charge of Personnel Selection and all psychological work of the Canadian Army including Officer Selection procedures. In 1944 he was loaned to the British War Office as an Officer for Special Selection, Belgian Army selection problems, sorting of German POWs and rehabilitation of returned British
POWs. In 1946 was sent by British War Office on a six-month tour to psychiatric and psychological centres in the U.S. to gather information on officer selection, personnel assessment and rehabilitation.

In 1947 Howard started the industrial psychology firm of Bois and Howard as consultants to business and industry in Montreal. In 1960 he became the director of Psychological Services for the Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation Centre, Montreal, but returned to private practice in 1967 as a partner in the firm Goldsman, Hopper and Howard. Later he was a partner in the firm of Mahoney, LeBlanc and Howard. Howard retired from full-time practice in 1976 and died on 24 June 1987.
