Accession consists of Smith's copies of earlier accounts and reports relating to railway surveys in British Columbia 1862-1874. Smith's list of his explorations and surveys n.d.; his Pacific Railway survey letterbook 1872-1874; memos relating to the Pacific Railway survey n.d., 1880; and letters to Sir John A. Macdonald 1880-1881. Printed tender documents for the CPR line from Emery's Bar to Port Moody BC, 1881 and for three railways in Nova Scotia 1886-1889. Smith's pamphlets, correspondence, memos and calculations for the Montreal, Ottawa & Georgian Bay Canal 1894-1898. Material on the proposed Trans-Canada Railway and Hudson's Bay and Pacific Railway 1894-1902. Smith's scrapbook containing press clippings about engineering and railways 1877-1894, 1925

The original "Family Register and Diary" of Marcus Smith and his diary for 1867. Numerous versions of Smith's memoirs and biographical sketches. A sketch book belonging to Smith 1836-1837, his correspondence and letters of reference 1834-1891, his marriage and letters to Anne Brock Smith 1856, 1867-1875 and press clippings. Smith's letters to his son Arthur regarding property in Vancouver and files on Smith's estate. A file on the disposition of Smith's memoirs by his daughter Clarice. Genealogical information on the Smith Family, social invitations, a file on Marcus Smith's brother Adam and other miscellaneous files.

Mrs. Anne Brock Smith's material relating to her notable military family, the Brocks which includes a list of births, general correspondence, genealogy and press clippings. Anne Brock Smith's correspondence with her siblings 1873-1877, miscellaneous letters addressed to her 1867-1905 and the disposal of her estate. Two publications on the Brock Family.

Thomas Rhys Smith's letterbook covering engineering positions, engineering work in New York City, personal and family matters, 1892-1900. This material relalate to MG29, B7.

Material relating to the railway engineer Marcus Smith, his wife Anne Brock Smith, his sons T. Rhys Smith and Arthur G. Smith and other family members.
The album includes 142 portraits of the Marcus Smith, Sandford Fleming, Brock, Brophy, Street, and Chester families. The photographs were taken by professional photographers, who would appear to include Topley, Notman, and others. Notable are three group shots of identified individuals involved with the creation and construction of the InterColonial Railway. Only a handful of portraits were taken outside of Canada
There are also 87 views, which include images from various areas of Britain, Mexico, the United States and Switzerland as well as Canada. These include castles belonging to the Duke of Northumberland, views in the north of England, Durham cathedral, Redhill (Surrey), Earlswood (Surrey), Ely Cathedral and various views of Wales. There are several unidentified views of residences and flora in Mexico, as well as two views of the Castle of Chillon and Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. Finally, there are a couple of views of Yosemite, in the United States. These are not attributed views and may have been cut down from larger images

Four loose photographs were also found in the album, and have been sleeved separately: A group portrait of some members of the Brock family, c 1885 by Jarvis, Ottawa Anne Clarice Smith in a wedding gown, 1899, by Topley, Ottawa Anne Clarice Smith, 1884, by Stanton, Toronto A cut-down autographed photograph of an unidentified man (the cutting removes part of the name, and date) c 1905.
