Gill, Charles Ignace Adélard, 1871-1918 : Charles Ignace Adélard Gill naît le 21 octobre 1871 à Sorel, au Québec. Il est le fils de l'Honorable Charles Gill, juge, et de Delphine Sénécal qui sont aussi parents de deux filles, Marie et Rachel. Enfant téméraire et passionné, Charles Gill est éduqué chez les Jésuites entre 1881 et 1885, au Collège de Nicolet en 1885, et au Collège Saint-Laurent entre 1886 et 1887. Il étudie le dessin avec l'abbé Thomas Maurault à Nicolet et continue son apprentissage de l'art avec l'abbé Chabert au Collège Saint-Laurent. En 1888, il passe l'été à Pierreville sous la tutelle du peintre américain George de Forest Brush. Entre 1888 et 1890, il étudie la peinture sous William Raphaël et William Brymner à la Art Association of Montreal. Entre 1890 et 1892, il effectue un premier séjour à Paris qui lui permet de parfaire sa formation à l'atelier du peintre-sculpteur Jean-Léon Gérôme. De 1892 à 1894, il retourne à Paris en compagnie des artistes Henri Beau, Joseph Saint-Charles, J.C. Franchère et Ludger Larose pour copier des toiles de maîtres à la demande de l'Abbé Sentennes de Notre-Dame. Les séjours parisiens de Charles Gill lui permettent également de faire la connaissance des auteurs Alphose Allais et Paul Verlaine. Le 12 mai 1902, Charles Gill épouse la journaliste Georgine Bélanger (du pseudonyme Gaétane de Montreuil) à Montréal. Ensemble, ils auront un fils, Roger-Charles.
Artiste, Charles Gill s'ouvre un atelier à Montréal en 1894 et devient professeur de dessin à l'École normale Jacques-Cartier en 1896. Outre ce poste qu'il occupera pour 22 ans, il s'intéresse toujours plus à la littérature. En 1896, il fréquente l'École littéraire de Montréal et en devient un des membres les plus marquants. Ses poèmes paraissent dans le journal La Presse dès 1898. Sa poésie ainsi que ses critiques littéraires et artistiques sont publiés dans de nombreux périodiques canadien-français dont Les Débats, Le Canada, La Presse, Le Terroir et Le Nationaliste. En 1900, il publie trois contes dans Les Soirées du Château de Ramezay. En 1901, il conçoit son projet le plus ambitieux, une épopée allégorique qui s'intitule Le Saint-Laurent. Lorsque l'auteur cesse de travailler en 1913, rien n'est toutefois achevé et un recueil posthume, Le Cap Éternité : poème suivi des Étoiles filantes (1919), ne présentera qu'une partie de son magnum opus.
Charles Ignace Adélard Gill meurt de l'influenza le 16 octobre 1918 à Montréal. Il laisse derrière lui une oeuvre picturale qui comprend paysages, natures mortes, portraits d'imminents Québécois, tableaux religieux et allégories, ainsi qu'une oeuvre littéraire qui marque un tournant dans la littérature canadienne-française du début du XXe siècle.
