Aker, Raymond, 1920-2003 : Raymond Aker, navigator, historian, was a world authority on the exploration of Sir Francis Drake. He was born in Yonkers, New York in 1920, and attended the California Nautical School from 1939 until 1942, when he became a deck officer on Matson Line troopships, and earned a master's licence. The balance of his career was spent at Westinghouse Electric, and his work there included ship propeller design and the Polaris missile.

Aker drew on his training and experience as a navigator to reconstruct Drake's voyage around the world of 1577-1580, and he headed a campaign to have Drake's Bay declared a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service. He was president of the Drake Navigators Guild in California, an organization that published his extensive research on the explorer, and it was his research that established that Drake had discovered Cape Horn. His research on Drake and reconstruction of that explorer's work enabled Aker to contribute significantly to the knowledge and understanding of Drake's ships' navigation, ship handling, careening, cartography, and hydraulics. His reconstruction of Drake's work included his creation of detailed drawings of the Golden Hind and other early exploration ships, and an eight foot cutaway model of the Golden Hind.
