The accession consists of various comic strips, cartoons, artworks and related materials, photographs and related materials, textual records, and some published materials, the whole covering the time frame of the late 1930's until 1982 - the majority of the records dating from the mid-1940's on. The collection includes more than 3600 cartoons representing titles and characters such as: "Nipper"; "Juniper Junction"; "Doug Wright's Family"; "Cynthia"; "The Wheels"; "Ticky Tacky Township"; "Max & Mini"; editorial cartoons done for "The Hamilton Spectator"; Second World War cartoons, as well as other cartoon related items. Non-cartoon artworks include some sketchbooks, drawings and printed reproductions, which in part reflect the artist's personal hobbies and interests, but at the same time also relate to his professional work. Also included are a small body of photographic prints, negatives and related items which almost entirely pertain to the production and publication of the artist's comic strips. The textual records for the most part pertain to the artist's service with the Royal Canadian Air Force, during the Second World War and consist of log and course note books, aircraft identification scrapbook and some miscellaneous letters. The collection also includes some published materials such as booklets pertaining to the artist's cartoon work, as well as a few miscellaneous pamphlets and postcards, ca. 3825 drawings, 11 sketchbooks, 193 prints (reproductions), 6 postcards, 3 scrapbooks, 5 objects, 314 photographs (or related items), and ca. 9 cm of textual records.
The photographic material consists of prints, negatives and related items which almost entirely pertain to the production and publication of the artist's comic strips and cartoons created by the late Douglas Austin Wright and dating from 1950's to the late 1970's.
