Sub-series consists of records created and or maintained by the Medical Rehabilitation Division and its predecessor the Medical Rehabilitation and Disability Advisory Service. The files cover provincial disability allowances, associations and institutes concerned with medical rehabilitation, etc.

Canada. Dept. of National Health and Welfare. Medical Rehabilitation Division : The Medical Rehabilitation and Disability Advisory Service was established in 1954 under the supervision of Principal Medical Officers for Environmental Health and Special Projects in anticipation of the passing of the Disabled Persons Act (2-3 Eliz. II, chap. 55 assented to on June 26, 1954). The Service provided advisory and consultative assistance to rehabilitation services and in the medical areas of the disability allowances program. In rehabilitation the service was a consultant to other branches of the department, particularly National Health Grants Administration. All projects submitted under the Medical Rehabilitation Grants were reviewed and recommendations were made in each case. This Service also provided guidance to medical evaluation boards established to advise provincial authorities administering disability allowance programs. In 1962 the Medical Rehabilitation and Disability Services amalgamated to become the Medical Rehabilitation Division.
