Series consists of radio programs and documentaries relating to the nursing profession. Included are sound recordings as follows: three episodes from a documentary radio series entitled "Nursing: The Inside Story", produced circa 1991. The programs look at sometimes rocky relations between doctors and nurses, struggles for respect in the nursing profession, and the discrepancies between the public's idea of what a nurse should be versus the reality of nurses and nursing. Also included in series is a compilation from the radio series "Nurses Week" featuring interviews and discussions regarding nursing in the 1990s; a radio documentary featured on CBC's Sunday Morning, that looks at the nursing shortage in the health care system, 1987; two parts of a radio documentary entitled "Condition Critical", produced circa 1988; a CBC news story covering the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) convention held in Fredericton, New Brunswick, 1970; a news conference with Rachel Bard and Mary Ellen Jean of the CNA, regarding the possibility of a severe nursing shortage in the next decade, produced in 1997; a news conference with Dr. Mary Ellen Jean, Chief Executive Officer of the CNA, regarding her experiences as a nurse and important issues faced by the nursing profession, recorded May 1996; Société Radio-Canada radio series entitled "Faut se parler" featuring guests Louis-Philippe Thibault, Rachel Bard, and Michel Boucher, recorded April 1997; an excerpt from the Société Radio-Canada radio program entitled "Présent", featuring an interview with Marie-Claire Portehaut and Jeanine Prévot, recorded September 1970; and a compilation of songs recorded for the International Year of Peace entitled "An Effort for Peace".
Series also consists of moving image documents including coverage of The Investiture of the Order of Canada; and news stories dealing with the role of the CNA in restructuring the education system for nurses; and "Nursing shortage", a news story that looks at the crisis created by the nursing shoring in Alberta.
Also included are documentaries produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation including "The Trouble with Malaria"; "The Tangled Mind", a look at Alzheimer's disease; "Deadly Inheritance", a look at Huntington's disease; "Hormone Imposers", a look at contaminants in our environment; "Young Women and Breast Cancer"; "Anxiety's Hostages", a look at three people who suffer from severe anxiety; "Regina versus Nelles", a docudrama about Susan Nelles, a Toronto nurse charged with the deaths of several infant children; and two episodes from the series "The Health Show" dealing with chlamydia and Alzheimer's. Also included is a video recording of a discussion between the director general of the CNA, director general of the Ottawa Hospital, and a nurse from the Ottawa Hospital, regarding the changing role of nurses over time.
In addition, series includes documentary programs dealing with the history of Canadian nurses as follows: "Angels of Mercy", a documentary film about the Canadian nursing sisters of the First and Second World War; "Canadian Nurses Association", a documentary focussing on the public's perception of the nurse's role in the community; "Nurses: The Heart of the System", film that looks at the changing roles of functions in the nursing profession; "Today's Nurse", a short documentary film that looks at the importance of nurses to the health care system; "Victorian Order of Nurses: A Second Century of Caring"; "Vigil", a short film which discusses the history of nursing in Canada; and "White Sentries Take Up Posts on Vital Front", a short newsreel story featuring student nurses learning various tasks needed to perform their duties as registered nurses, 1942.
Additional documentaries include: "Stop Smoking: A Program for Women"; "The Future of the Health Care System", produced by the National Forum on Health; "Nurses: Web of Denial", a video about drug abuse amongst nurses; "Un Martyr sur terre", program dealing with the issue of Locked-In Syndrome; "Zamboni", program dealing with the issue of air pollutants; "Doing What I Can - Supportive Care at Home for the Seriously Ill"; "Nurses: The Violent Story", a film that looks at the issue of violence toward nurses; "Nursing Research: From Question to Funding", a documentary film that looks at the value of nursing research; "Good Medicine", a short video dealing with the issues of substance abuse; "Meeting the Challenge", a video highlighting challenges faced by community nurses and the people they serve; "Opening the Door to Community Health", a look at the Canadian healthcare system; "Creating Community Solutions for a Brighter Future", a short video which looks at health care in two small rural communities; and "The Leaf and the Lamp", a short film highlighting the services and functions of the CNA and its relation with the provincial affiliates.
Television programs produced by The House of Commons Broadcasting Service include: The Joint Committee on the 1987 Constitutional Accord, CNA executive director presents the associations concerns regarding the Meech Lake Accord.
Series also consists of informational programs and videos. Titles include: "Canadian Nurses Protective Society", video intended to gives nurses information regarding the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS); "For the Worker, For the Workplace", a video highlighting the roles and functions of the occupational health nurse; "Behind the Mask", video featuring the roles and functions performed by operating room nurses; "Providing Home Centred Care to People with AIDS"; "Program Six" from the TVO series "Life Lines", a panel discussion concerning nursing issues and how they affect patients; "Nurses: Maids or Medicine?", panel discussion on the TVO program "Speaking Out"; "The New Nurse: A Career for All Reasons"; a video recording of a slide show highlighting the services that the CNA provides for the nursing profession; video recording of a workshop entitled "Beginning With Us: A Collaborative Approach to Domestic Violence"; "Ensuring a Healthy Future for Canadians: A Dialogue on the Canada Health Act", a panel discussion on the on the state of the Canada Health Act and how medical professionals will deal with the future of medicare; and a panel discussion on nursing issues entitled "Nurses in Action with Registered Nurses Association of Ontario".
