Sub-sub-series consists of registers containing abstracts only of despatches to and from Upper Canada, and not copies of the despatches themselves. The corresponding entry books containing the texts of the despatches may be found elsewhere within this fonds, in the Despatches to the Lieutenant Governor, S Series sub-sub-series, volume 3. These abstracts may also have served as indexes for the letter books now found elsewhere within this fonds in the Letter books of despatches to the Colonial Office sub-series.

The despatches are indexed under a number of headings such as civil, commercial, ecclesiastical, education, executive, financial, judicial, legislative, military, miscellaneous, political, Indian Affairs, immigration, Crown Lands and public works. Despatches are listed chronologically under these headings and a précis of their contents, the despatch number, date and cross-references to replies are included. At the end of each of the four registers is a nominal index noting subjects and correspondence with a notation such as 341/8 which should be read as page 341, despatch number 8.

Volumes 25 and 26 respectively of this sub-sub-series are abstracts of despatches from Sir George Arthur to the Secretary of State and of despatches from the Secretary of State to Sir George Arthur.
