Roussow, Georges, 1898-1961 : Georges Roussow was born on 8 January 1898 in Kharkiv, Ukraine, the son of Prof. Alexander Roussow and Sophie Lindfors. He received his primary education in Montpelier, France and his secondary education in St. Petersburg and in Kiev which he completed in 1913. He enrolled in the University of St. Volodimir in Kiev but during the First World War all universities and institutes in Ukraine were evacuated to Saratov. He graduated from the University of Kiev in 1919. He was a student delegate to the Ukrainian Central Rada. In 1919-1920, he was assistant professor at the Kamenitz-Podolsk University. He managed to escape from the Bolsheviks with his family and from 1920-1923 he studied at the University of Vienna graduating as a Doctor of Philosophy. He taught at various institutes and universities in Czechoslovakia from 1923 until 1930 when he received an appointment at the National Zootechnical Institute in Bucharest, Romania. During 1935-1939 he was a professor of pisciculture at the School of Fish and Pisciculture in Giurgia in Romania. He was deported to Germany in 1941. From 1943 to 1945 he was able to work in Prague at the Hydrobiological Institute. In May 1945 he emigrated to France and in August 1946 he arrived in the United States. In May 1947 he was employed at the Biology Office, University of Montreal. In 1951 he entered the biology department of the Fish and Game Department, Government of Quebec.
He studied various species of fish in the Montreal area and in 1955 he travelled to Abitibi to study the sturgeons. He published over 30 specialist studies in his area of research in various scientific journals and publications. During his years at the Université de Montreal he also taught Ukrainian literature and language in the Department of Slavic Studies. He was active in the Ukrainian community of Montreal and a member of the Taras Shevchenko Scientific Society. He edited the Ukrainian newspaper, Ukrainian Toiler in 1948-1950. He also authored several books on Ukrainian literary-philosophical themes.
He died while conducting research at a biological station near Montreal on 2 August 1961.
Roussow, Natalie, b.1902 : Natalie Roussow was born in Kiev on 14 June 1902. She graduated from Doughinsky College (Kiev) in 1918 and attended the Ukrainian University in Prague from 1922 to 1926. She graduated from the Ecole des Beaux Arts (Nice-Paris) in 1927 and worked as a decorator, fashion designer and commercial artist. She was also invited to work as a decorator in the residence of the King of Romania. She also worked in the German film industry and published a number of articles and books in French, Italian and Ukrainian.
In France and also in Quebec she assisted Ukrainian refugees and immigrants. She was particularly interested in Ukrainian cultural and literary affairs. In 1953 she completed her M.A. thesis, "Influences de l'Esprit Occidental dans le Theatre Ukrainien", at the Université de Montreal. She was active in the Ukrainian community in Montreal, and took a special interest in cultural and film projects, publishing several articles on these subjects.
