Mandryka, Mykyta I., 1886-1979 : Born to Ivan and Dokiya Mandryka on September 28, 1886 in the city of Kyiv, Ukraine, Mykyta I. Mandryka was a leading Ukrainian poet in Canada, lawyer, scholar, and prominent figure in the Ukrainian-Canadian community.

Prior to arriving in Canada in 1928, Mandryka served in both the Russian and Ukrainian armies. In 1917 he was elected to the first Ukrainian Parliament (Rada) in Kyiv where he administered the Land Court and Economic and Social administrations. In 1919, the RADA sent him to Japan, China and Vladivostok as a special commissioner, and he subsequently joined the Ukrainian Mission in Constantinople (Istanbul). He was also the Ukrainian consul to Bulgaria and attended the University of Sophia in Bulgaria while he was there. In 1925 he attended the Ukrainian Free University in Prague, Czechoslovakia, obtaining his Doctor of Laws degree. It was in Prague that he joined the anti-Soviet faction of the Ukrainian Party of Socialist Revolutionists.

Unable to return to the Ukraine, Mykyta and his wife Hanna emigrated to Canada in 1928, sponsored by the Ukrainian National Home Association in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He quickly established himself as a leader in the Canadian-Ukrainian community, becoming an active member of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress for 30 years, as well as member of a variety of Ukrainian organizations in Canada, such as the Prosvita Organization in Winnipeg, the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League, the Ukrainian National Federation and the United Hetman Organization. He also wrote numerous articles in Ukrainian newspapers in Canada and published six books of poety.

Mykyta Mandryka died on August 20, 1979 in Winnipeg Manitoba.
