Series consists of photographs depicting events and individuals associated with the career of Herbert S. Rayner as an officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, 1935-1964, particularly during the following appointments: Secretary of the Chiefs of Staff Committee, National Defence Headquarters, 1951-1953; Chief of Naval Personnel, 1955-1957; Flag Officer Pacific Coast, 1957-1960; Chief of the Naval Staff, 1960-1964. Photographic material also depicts the personnel and activities of the Canadian Services College; Royal Roads, B.C., during the period, 1948-1949. when Captain H.S. Rayner was Commandant; operations; personnel of H.M.C.S. Magnificent during the period (1953-1954) when Commodore H.S. Rayner was Commanding Officer; visit of Vice-Admiral H.S. Rayner, Chief of the Naval Staff, R.C.N., to U.S. Navy installations, March 1954; visit of Vice-Admiral H.S. Rayner to H.M.C.S. Cornwallis, Deep Brook, N.S., January, 1964. In addition, photographs document the H.M.C.S. Skeena, ca. 1931-1939; H.M.C.S. Magnificent entering Esquimalt, B.C., ca. 1953-1954; a portrait of Vice-Admiral H.G. DeWolf, R.C.N., ca. 1957; replica of H.M.S. Bounty built at Lunenberg, N.S., ca.1960; U.S.S. Essex, 19 November 1960, U.S. Navy photo; visit of Admiral R.L. Dennison, U.S.N., Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic, to Ottawa, ca. 1960-1963; and a group photo of members of the Naval Board of Canada, Ottawa, Ont., July 1964, depicting members of the Royal Canadian Navy including Vice-Admiral H.G. DeWolf and members of the Naval Board of Canada.

Also included are two original editorial cartoons by Sid Barron for "Victoria Times", 1959-1960, concerning naval activities.
