Fonds consists of textual records documenting Sarah Gersovitz's personal life and her career in the fine arts and drama, arranged in the following series: Correspondence; Subject files; Exhibition and sales records; Clippings; and Drama records, including a sub-series, the Henry Gamer records.

Fonds also includes a large number of woodcuts, linocuts and serigraphs; preparatory sketches for prints; photographic prints relating to specific projects; and early art school projects by Gersovitz.

Gersovitz, Sarah, 1920-2007 : Sarah Valerie Gersovitz was born in Montreal in 1920. After beginning her art studies at L'École des Beaux-Arts in 1941 with Louis Parent, she then studied with Herman Heimlich, 1945-1949, at his private studio. She continued her studies at the Musée des Beaux Arts 1954-1956, with Jacques de Tonnancour, Gordon Webber and Moe Reinblatt, and then at l'École des Arts appliqués in 1957, where she studied again under Louis Parent and with the influential Albert Dumouchel. An artist who has worked in many media, she is best-known for her printmaking. Her first solo exhibition was in Toronto in 1960 and since then she has had some 36 other solo shows in Canada (including two at the Museé des Beaux-Arts in Montreal) and in Germany and Peru. Her work has been chosen for over 60 international exhibitions, including ones in Grenchen, Switzerland, 1961; Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1968; and Ljubljana, Yugoslavia, 1975 and 1978. She has won numerous prizes for her prints, including the International Jury Prize for Graphics, Gabrovo, Bulgaria, in 1989 and a Purchase Award by the National Gallery of South Australia. In 1996, the Bibliothèque Nationale du Québec made a special acquisition of the corpus of her graphic works, numbering some 316 prints. Gersovitz's art is often humourous or satirical in tone.

Gersovitz has taught studio courses as well as art history at the Saidye Bronfman Centre in Montreal, and elsewhere, and worked as an art critic for 'ArtsAtlantic'. In the 1970s, Gersovitz, who had married in 1944 and raised three children, went back to school and received a Diploma in Communication Studies, 1978, and an M.A. in Creative Writing, 1982, from Concordia University. She began to write plays, winning prizes at playwriting competitions in both Canada (first prize at the National Playwriting Competition, Ottawa) and the United States (first prize, Country Playhouse Playwriting Competition, Houston, Texas; first prize Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, Florida). Her plays have been performed at the Ottawa Little Theatre, Solar Stage (Toronto), the Maxwell Anderson Playwrights Series (Connecticut) and the Nate Horne Theatre, New York. One of her plays, 'Portia', was published by I.E. Clark, Texas. Many of her plays, which tend to comedy, are satirical looks at the art world.

Sarah Gersovitz died on September 22, 2007.

Note générale :

The initial acquisition was donated by Sarah Gersovitz in 2001, and includes some material she inherited from her brother, the actor Henry Gamer, after his death in 1989. Subsequent acquisitions in 2006 and 2007 added a substantial number of prints and preliminary drawings for many of the works.
