40 cm of textual records.Langue du document :anglaisPortée et contenu :Fonds consists of oral history interviews and transcripts by Professor Charles Roland with Canadian medical practioners, wounded veterans and prisoners of war about their experiences in prison camps in Germany and occupied France during World War II, German prisoners of war held in Canada and the USSR and survivors of the Warsaw ghetto. The fonds also includes interviews with Canadians who served in the Spanish Civil War. Other interviews document the careers of noteworthy Canadian medical practitioners, medical scientists and other medical professionals who were active in the 1920s and 1930s before the availability of modern antibiotics.Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Roland, Charles G., 1933- : Dr. Charles Gordon Roland was born in 1933 and earned his medical degree. From 1977 to 1999 Dr. Roland held the Hannah Chair in the History of Medicine at McMaster University after returning to Canada from Mayo Medical School and the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Roland has had a distinguished career publishing dozens of scholarly articles in the history of medicine. He is best known for his work on Sir William Osler, for compiling important reference material on the history of Canadian medicine and, more recently, for his two latest books on the medical experience of prisoners of war in the Far East and Europe during the Second World War. In 1999, Dr. Roland retired and was appointed Hannah Professor Emeritus in the History of Medicine and continues an active career in medical history.
From 1979 to 1987 Dr. Roland conducted many oral history interviews with medical scientists, World War Two survivors of prisoner-of-war camps and survivors of the Spanish Civil War, victims of the Warsaw Ghetto and medical missionaries. Many of these interviews were conducted during the research phase for several of his publications. In 1995 Dr. Roland was awarded the Jason A. Hannah Medal by the Royal Society of Canada in recognition for his work in the history of medicine for his book entitled Courage Under Siege: Starvation, Disease and Death in the Warsaw Ghetto, 1940-43.Charles Roland died on 10 June 2009.
