Interview of Thomas Patrick Murray, age 92, of Madawaska, Ontario, who talks about his early life in the Madawaska Valley. Murray, who was born in a log shanty near Madawaska in 1880, explains that, as a child, he felt his family was well off having their own home, sufficient food and a few sheep even though there were no schools, churches or doctors and the nearest flour mill was located at Combermere. He recalls leaving home at 14 for his first job as a water boy for the crews building the Northern Temiskaming Railroad. He talks about the heavy manual labour involved in grading and laying the track using picks, shovels, scrapers, and wheelbarrows. Murray also talks about some of the men from the Madawaska Valley who became prominent in later years: George W. Leith, a worker on the N.T. Railroad gangs who became president of the same railroad; James H. Sanderson, another former railroad worker who became the biggest cheese exporter in Canada; and John Wesley Dafoe, an assistant to former prime minister Mackenzie King at the Imperial Conference in 1923.
