Interview of Ambrose Thomas, longtime resident of Gabarus, Nova Scotia, about his memories of Gabarus. Thomas, who was one of ten children, was a fisherman and a worker at a nearby military base and recalls the "merchant system" in which the merchant in town extended credit to the fisherman for his supplies and in return purchased the catch at low prices. Thomas also recalls the many shipwrecks along the rocky shoreline of Gabarus. He relates that many fishermen were involved in the illegal rum-running trade that flourished in Nova Scotia from 1916 to 1939. He describes how large ships from the West Indies anchored off the 12-mile limit called "rum row", and how small fishing boats met the ships at night and brought the rum to shore where trucks hauled it to the larger centres. He also talks about how the rum-runners "outsmarted" the RCMP by dressing as clergy and painting milk bottles filled with rum white. Other topics include the proliferation of illegal stills in the area and the social mores and traditions of the townspeople.
