Radio program in a series about contemporary issues in religion. This consists of a coverage of a symposium held on February 13, 1965, by the University of Toronto about change brought about in the world as a result of technology. Among the speakers are: Marshall McLuhan, Professor of English at St. Michael's College; Malcolm Ross, Professor of English at Trinity College; the Reverend Father J.A. Raftis, Professor of Christian Social Doctrine at St. Michael's College and James Sellers, Professor of Chrisian Ethics and Theology at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.~McLuhan speaks about: the potential of the telecommunications satellite Telstar to create a new environment. In McLuhan's view, a technology tends to become an environment, gradually pervading the human situation, until it is part of our environment, displacing other environments. He states that radio and television will become incidental contents of Telstar. The contents of radio and television are "old environments". McLuhan illustrates this point by explaining that old motion pictures (old environments) are now part of television, turning the old environment into an art form because of our nostalgia for old films.~One theme of the conference is the need for drastic change in Christianity as more people question and criticize the established order. Christianity cannot ignore the changes brought about by technology. Raftis speaks about different levels of theological studies and the relationship between faith and intelligence. Sellers speaks about how more people are living in large cities, where life in impersonal, while small towns and parishes decline. He also comments on the use of the mass media to transmit a religious message.~McLuhan then speaks about a definition of communication and the need for feedback and involvement in order for there to be communication.~In addition to the presentations by the speakers, the symposium also consists of small discussion groups that present their views. Representatives of various groups describe their efforts to relate religion to modern thought, the potential for technology, particularly modern communications technology, to build a sense of community, and preaching as communication. Keeping in mind the sense of alienation from God embodied in the statement "God is Dead", some participants feel that theology implies that God remains regardless of change. Malcolm Ross, who chairs the symposium, makes some closing remarks at the symposium and broadcaster Bill McNeil sums up the significance of the event.
