Interview with Mabel Lucas Rutherford at age 93 about her turn-of-the-century childhood in Toronto's east end and her experiences overseas as a Canadian nurse in World War I. Rutherford recalls her early life in the village of Little York (now known as the Danforth) where her father ran a general store. She describes goods sold in the store, reads an 1894 price list, and tells of the store's failure due to the credit system. Other recollections of early Toronto include: her school days at Jarvis Collegiate; riding horse-drawn streetcars; the Massey family (including memories of actor Raymond and Governor General Vincent Massey as children); the importance of the church in her family life; early jobs; her decision to become a nursing student in 1908; her nurses training in tents outside of the Toronto Western Hospital. In 1914, Rutherford joined the #4 Canadian General Hospital Unit and was sent overseas on a leaky boat called the Kildonan Castle. She describes her experiences with other Canadian nurses at a British hospital in Rouyn, France caring for wounded soldiers from the front lines and, later, on a hospital ship amid a battle at Salonica. Rutherford's recollections include: poor conditions at Salonica and Malta; frostbite and gangrene suffered by injured soldiers during cold winter; a bombing raid by a German zeppelin; impresions of Lester B. Pearson as a young orderly; time spent in England; and her return to Canada in 1919. The interview concludes with a discussion of the Dumbells and the Queen's Hotel in Toronto.
