The accession consists of six portrait miniatures. Portraits are of Madame Georgianne Chaussé, mother of the artist, ca. 1926; politician Robert Choquette, 1950-60; poet J. Aldéric Raymond, before 1953; Governor General Jules Léger, and Madame Léger, 1976; author and painter Sophy Louisa Elliott, 1957.

Lavoye, Juliette de, 1903- : The Montreal artist Marie Anne Juliette de Lavoye was born in 1903, and is one of the few Canadian women miniature painters. She changed her last name from her ancestral name of Lavoie to avoid confusion with several other Juliette Lavoies. In 1925-26 she was studying philosophy and in 1926 took a six week art course at the Koehne Studio in Chicago. After returning to Montreal she worked as a designer for the CPR, CNR and Bell Telephone (1928-39). In 1931 she studied art a further eight months at the Grand Central Art School in New York. In the 1930s she was copying photographs on porcelain and becoming a proficient miniaturist. Her sitters included royalty, celebrities and historical figures. After a commission from Lord Bessborough to paint his young son, she was commissioned to paint Princess Elizabeth and Margaret Rose, and their miniatures were given to the King and Queen during the royal visit of 1939. During the war she studied drafting at Sir George Williams College (1941-46) and worked for the war effort as a draftsman for the Angus Shops (CPR) and Noordyn Aircraft Company, after which she resumed painting miniatures. One of her most important undertakings was a commission from Samuel Bronfman, founder of the House of Seagram to paint thirty-four miniatures of the Fathers of Confederation. The portraits were subsequently deposited at the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. A member of several art societies she has exhibited in Canada and with the American Society of Miniature Painters. She was the first Canadian elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers of London in 1953. Macdonald, Colin S.
