Material centering on the Hale and Hensley families, with portraits of some members of the Amherst family. Among the portrait miniatures are portraits of the Hale and Amherst families who were related through marriage and some of their children. Among the most notable are William Pitt Amherst (1773-1857) and his sister Elizabeth Frances (Amherst) Hale (1774-1826), who were the nephew and niece of Jeffery Amherst (1717-1797). All except one by M.J. Malloney, are by unknown artists. Among the silhouettes are portraits of members of the Hale, Orlebar, Winslow, Hotham and Bethune families. All are by unknown artists except one by J. Meirs. The watercolours and drawings are of various subjects, including a chalk portrait of John Hale attributed to Gerritt Schipper, other portraits, landscapes and family houses such as Kings Walden, England, the ancestral seat of the Hale family, and the home of the Chaloner family. The works are also by Elizabeth Francis Hale, the Reverend Richard Hale, the Reverend Darling, T. Boggio, and others. Some of the prints have identified artists, engravers or publishers. Two unusual items included in the material are a small notebook titled: "Sampson Family Notebook (N. Ireland)", and a red wax impression of the Signet ring of Mary Queen of Scots. Some photographs are of unidentified sitters, or photographs of artwork most by unidentified photographers, except those by Gowland and G.R. Perry.

Hale (family) : General Hale (1728-1806) was active during the campaigns at Louisbourg, Cape Breton, Fort Ticonderoga and Quebec.

John Hale (1765-1838), the son of General John Hale and his wife Mary Chaloner, served in Canada as aide-de-camp and military secretary to HRH The Duke of Kent from 1793 to 1798. On April 3, 1799 he married topographical artist Elizabeth Francis Amherst (1774-1826), the daughter of Lieutenant-General William Amherst, and the sister of William-Pitt Amherst, 2nd Baron Amherst. In June 1799, they sailed to Quebec where he assumed the appointment of Deputy Paymaster to the British forces. He subsequently became a member of the Legislative Council of Lower Canada (1808), president of the Council (1815), member of the Executive Council (1820), and Receiver-General of Lower Canada until his death in 1838. He was also an important landowner in Lower Canada and owned the Seigneurie of Ste. Anne-de-la-Perade, puchased in 1819 from the de Lanaudiere family. He and his wife were leaders in the English community in Quebec, and he was one of the members of the Literary and Historical Society of Lower Canada. The Hales had twelve children, and four succeeding generations continued to live in their Quebec residence on Des Carrieres Street until 1912. W. H.
