Interview of Walter Wayrynen by Raili Nieminen for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Walter Wayrynen was born in Pihtiputaalla on 1-11-1908. He came to Canada on September 25, 1926, and landed at Halifax. Stockholm Swedish American Lines. His brother was here to meet him. He lived 42 miles from Hornepayne, and worked there for two years. Moved to Lenan in 1929 and worked on the railroad. He married in 1932, and moved to Caramat in 1936, then to Dorion in 1944, and to Silver Harbour in 1959. He retired in 1969 from CNR after working there for 42 years 10 months. He joined the Union in 1927, and still pays dues of $8.00 per month now that he is retired. He belonged to the Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) in Hornepayne, Fort William and Port Arthur, but doesn't belong anymore. He was a member of the International Co-op and Co-op restaurants. In 1967-8, he was on the Board of Directors. He blames the Co-op's downfall on poor facilities (parking) and credit. <20mn>
