The files in this series consist of documents relating to the publications, conference papers and Commission Brief submissions of Richard J. Joy. The files are organized into two blocks: a books block and a papers and briefs block. The drafts, correspondence and receipts relating to self-publication of Joy's book, "Languages in Conflict" constitute the largest percentage of the Books records. The book evolved from a paper given at the ACFAS (Association canadienne-française pour l'avancement de la science) conference of 1962 and a Brief submitted to the Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism of André Laurendeau and Davidson Dunton. Correspondence files from 1965-1967 document Joy's unsuccessful attempts to have the book published by Toronto University Press and Exposition Press Inc. of New York and to have the project sponsored by the Canadian Centennial Commission Publications Program. Undeterred Joy eventually published the book himself with the help of Ronalds-Federated Ltd. of Montreal. Several files of correspondence and receipts and a ledger book document how Joy marketed and disseminated the work to Canadian governmental agencies, politicians and individuals and academics across Canada, in the US and overseas. Information regarding the second printing of the book by McClelland and Stewart can also be found in this block of files.
Joy's next book, "Canada's Official-Language Minorities" was commissioned by the C.D. Howe Institute in 1978. Two drafts and a file of correspondence document the development of this project. His last book, "Canada's Official Languages: the Progress of Bilingualism", was published by the University of Toronto Press in 1992. Documents pertaining to Joy's last book include two drafts and a small file of reviews.
The papers and briefs block of files document Joy's continuing work in and active contribution to the study of language and bilingualism issues and linguistic demographics in Canada. Included in this block of files are drafts and papers which were presented at academic conferences, such as ACFAS (Association canadienne-française pour l'avancement de la science), or published in periodicals such as the "American Review of Canadian Studies". Also included are drafts and final texts for briefs submitted to various governmental Commissions, such as the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism, La Commission sur l'enquête sur la situation de la langue française et sur les droits linguistiques au Québec (Gendron Commission) and the Ministerial Commission on French-Language Secondary Education (Symons Commission).
