The series consists of reference files, correspondence and other records kept by Pfeiffer largely relating to his careers with the Department of Northern Affairs and the National Museum, promoting and preserving Indian and Inuit arts and crafts and other artifacts documenting Canadian history. Included are general reference files reflecting his interest and involvement in the Canadian Arctic (such as files of material relating to the Arctic Circle club). Also included are his files relating to his research on Cornelius Krieghoff for Marius Barbeau, including correspondence with Barbeau 1934-1939, notes on Krieghoff paintings (some kept in a notebook first used by Pfeiffer's father to record a series of meetings of the International Rotary Clubs n.d.), and correspondence with dealers and collectors 1957-1965 about their Krieghoff paintings. There are files on the history of furniture design, including material for a series of talks on the subject; files relating to Pfeiffer's collecting trip to Newfoundland for the National Museum in 1960, with his account of the surrounding controversy; field notes, reports and other material relating to his trips to Port Harrison 1955, James Bay 1960, and elsewhere in the Arctic; reference files on antiques, artifacts and folklore; and files of correspondence and memoranda, including letters from Lionel Massey 1956, Helen Creighton 1961, Marius Barbeau 1959, Frances Adaskin 1963, Percival Price 1963, Simonee (E7-470) 1963-1965, Eugene Forsey 1964, from various departmental colleagues, from Arctic missionaries and administrators, and from museum colleagues in Canada, the United States and Europe. There are also notes and texts for talks on arts and crafts and other aspects of museum work.
