Series consists of records created by the offices administering specific funding programs within the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The records include: case files related to the Fellowship program; applications, case files and general inquiries related to the Research Grants program; unsuccessful case files related to the International relations program; and unsuccessful case files related to the Strategic grants program. The file numbers of those case files typically feature a number representing the precise funding opportunity. Records also include correspondence related to the Canada Research Chairs program; those files are organized by university.

Series also consists of one medallion commissioned by SSHRC to commemorate the "International Cooperation Year/L'Année de la coopération internationale" of 1965.

Program Branch : The Program Branch, ca. 1990, was responsible for fostering, promoting and assisting research through the delivery of the Council's grants and fellowships programs and for maintaining the Assessors Database. The Office of the Director General, Program Branch, supervised three directors respectively responsible for 1) the Research and Communications Grants programs, 2) Strategic Grants and Joint Initiatives programs and 3) the Fellowships programs and Institutional Grants.

Program officers in the branch were grouped into six work teams organized around six broad research areas: literature and fine arts, humanities, civilization and the environment, cognitive sciences, policy studies and collaborative research and interdisciplinary studies. Under this matrix organization, each team administered all applications for research and communication grants, strategic grants, and fellowships whose subject matter falls within the area for which it was responsible. Each team was composed of a team leader, two to four program officers, and one or two administrative assistants. The program directors provided functional guidance and leadership for their programs to the various work teams. Infosource
