The series consists of files documenting Sydney Newman's career with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as director/producer 1952-1958; also included are some files of correspondence with the CBC dating from the late 1960s, while Newman was investigating the possibilities of returning to the CBC.

The files documenting the first part of Newman's involvement with the CBC include an annual report, material on the Canadian Council of Authors and Artists, clippings, correspondence and memoranda, memorabilia, notes on productions, publicity material, reference material, a report on television, script manuals, copies of set designs, a short story by Leo Orenstein, material on the Stratford Festival, and a studio practices handbook. Among the correspondents are John Grierson 1954; David Greene, Gregory Clark, Leonard White, Gerald Pratley, Lorne Greene 1958.

The material on Newman's interest in returning to the CBC in the late 1960s includes correspondence and memoranda and a report by Robert Anderson on films. Also included are some notes for speeches regarding the CBC later in Newman's career.

Arranged in two parts reflecting the two stages of Newman's involvement with the CBC, each arranged alphabetically.

The series also consists of television documentaries about the start of television broadcasting in Canada and the early years of television production at the CBC.
