Sub-series consists of files relating to official assignments of mineral claims by the original claimant to a subsequent owner. In 1907, the Mines Branch began recording official assignments of mineral claims by the original claimant to a subsequent owner. Very often, this process witnessed individual miners selling, transferring, or trading their mineral rights to bigger companies which wanted to consolidate a large number of claims into one holding. This system of assignments was initiated by the Mines Branch, and carried on by the Mining Lands and Yukon Branch, Mining Lands Branch, Lands Section, Mining Lands Section, Lands Division, and Mining and Lands Division, beginning with Assignment 1 in 1907 and continuing, for the records in the custody of the National Archives of Canada, to Assignment 20,595 in 1957. Because this is an open-ended series spanning seven or more agencies, it has been placed in this inventory with the records of the Branch which originated this system of assignments.
