Adjudication is the formal process under the Public Service Staff Relations Act whereby a grievance related to an alleged breach of rights under a collective agreement or affecting the terms and conditions of employment is reviewed by a board (usually a Chair, a nominee of the bargaining agent and a nominee of the employer). Following a quasi-judicial procedure, the adjudication board renders a decision which is binding on the employer (the Treasury Board representing the Government of Canada) and the bargaining agent representing the aggrieved employee. The decision is subject to appeal to the federal court. Subjects may relate to any provision of a collective agreement or arbitral award and disciplinary action leading to discharge, suspension or financial penalty.

In effecting certain transfers, it was corroborated by the PSSRB that the example case file increment for 1986 was inadvertantly destroyed. This series, therefore, does not have a proportional set of example files completed during 1986.
