Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad Company : The Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad Company was incorporated under laws of the States of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont to build from the seaport of Portland, Maine to the Canadian Boundaries. The 149.58 miles of line between Portland and Island Pond, Vermont, were constructed and opened for traffic between July 1848 and January 1853. The St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railway Company continued the line from Island Pond to the Canadian boundary to link with its line to Montreal. The combined line from Montreal to Portland was opened for traffic on 18 July 1853.

From 1 July 1853 the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railway Company was leased to the Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada for 999 years at an annual rental.

In 1943 the Canadian National Railway Company obtained ownership of the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railway Company by purchase of the capital stock. This was possible through the prior acquisition of the stock by the Canadian Government under the United Kingdom vesting order of 26 January 1942. The ensuing reorganization, besides changing the financial arrangements, resulted in the sale to the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad Company of the 15.28 miles of line from the Canadian boundary to Island Pond.

The corporate existence of the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad Company finally ended when, under Order-in-Council PC 1959-5238 of 30 September 1957, it amalgamated with and took the name of the Canadian National Railway Company. RG30 General Inventory
