Canada. Canadian Forces Base (Toronto, Ont.) : National Defence established CFB Toronto at Downsview in North York opening the base on 1 April 1966. Reporting to Air Transport Command, CFB Toronto and Downsview airstrip provided support services for units allocated to that particular area, carried out training for pilots, and stored locally based aircraft. With the disbandment of ATC, CFB Toronto reported to Air Transport Group commencing 2 September 1975. On 15 February 1977 the Minister of National Defence released 264 acres of property to facilitate housing projects for the city of Toronto, thus limiting future growth of the base. It became a part of 14 Training Group in Air Command on 9 September 1979. The Canadian Forces Aircrew Selection Centre was also formed in 1979 and stationed at CFB Toronto where it administered tests for selecting pilots and navigators, aircrew research and experimental testing. On 1 July 1982 the military use of the CFB Toronto/Downsview airstrip was downgraded to helicopter operations to support 2 Air Reserve Wing. Although DND retained ownership, the DeHavilland Aircraft Company received a private operations license to man the airport. The base was transferred from Air Command to Force Mobile Command in 1990. 1 September 1992 saw the reduction of CFB London to detachment size whereafter it came under the control of CFB Toronto. The detachment in Hamilton, Ontario had similarly come under the authority of CFB Toronto in October 1973. CFB Toronto was closed and replaced by an Administrative Unit, representing about 65% of the Base's strength, on 1 April 1996. RG 24 General Inventory
