Series consists of central registry files created and/or maintained by the Fair Employment Practices Branch. These records relate to the organization and establishment of the Fair Employment Practices Section (later Branch), its objectives and programme and its participation in numerous conferences and committees between 1967 and 1972. A substantial portion of these records consists of case files on complaints filed with the Branch.

Canada. Fair Employment Practices Branch : On 14 May 1953 Parliament passed the Canada Fair Employment Practices Act (1-2 Eliz. II, c.19) which prohibited discrimination in employment by reason of race, national origin, colour or religion. The Minister of Labour was made responsible for implementation of this Act and the Fair Employment Practices Section (later Branch) was created in the Industrial Relations Branch of the Department. The provisions of this legislation were later included in the Canada Labour Code. The Branch was set up in 1966-1967 to administer Parts I and II of the Canada Labour Code. These portions of the Code prohibited discrimination in hiring practices based on race, colour, creed or national origin in all areas of work within federal jurisdiction and required that women be given the same rate of pay as men for doing the same work.
