Oral history interview of John Owen, chief news editor of CBC television news. He talks about: changes in production standards, presentation style and news policy in CBC television news from the 1960s to the late 1980s; improvements in The National newscast brought about by changes in the technology used to provide graphics such as maps and images and the switch from film to videotape; the dark, gloomy look of The National in the 1970s when the show was on at 11 p.m., the set was not well lit and anchor Knowlton Nash wore glasses with very thick lenses; problems in the past with news coverage shot on film because of differences in film laboratory processing standards in different parts of the country and the length of time it took to shoot film, process it, edit it and get it on the air; the CBC’s development of The National and The Journal flagship news and current affairs package to attract viewers and the decision to broadcast it at 10 p.m.; efforts to inject more regional content in the newscast; techniques to keep viewers watching the newscast such as headlines and recaps; differences in television news style between the CBC, the BBC and the U.S. networks; the weekend network news programs Saturday Report and Sunday Report; competition with CTV; the use of visuals; the importance of audio in the newscasts; the roles of reporters and anchors; the importance of hiring reporters specializing in specific subjects such as labour, social affairs, law, business and medicine; the importance of hiring women reporters and reporters from visible minorities; camera set-ups; the relationship between the news producers and the unions; increasing flexibility in the roles allowed by unions, such as allowing one person to operate a camera and do the sound; cooperation with other networks such as CBS and NBC and with the international news agency Visnews; CBC’s greater emphasis in recent years on Canadian news, particularly regional news rather than federal politics; sharing of resources by the staff of The National and The Journal; improvements brought about by satellite technology, notably allowing the anchor to talk to foreign correspondents during newscasts; the increase in coverage of international stories by CBC correspondents rather than relying on footage from U.S. networks; and the importance of audience ratings.
