Interview with H.R.N. Clyne about his experiences with the 29th Battalion during World War I. Clyne begins with a humourous account of his first battle experience in Flanders. Determined not to appear "green" in front of his fellow soldiers, he says, "I had made up my mind not to duck if I heard a bullet." However, he says, "Two bullets whizzed and hit the trees beind me and I ducked - twice." He continues with an explanation of the "stealth raids...a Canadian invention," in which certain soldiers advanced with stealth to cut wire and mark the passage through the wire with "white tape" to guide the infantry during the main attack.~Evaluating the battle of the St. Eloi Craters as a "very useless show," he says, "We just lost a great many good men." Clyne reads a passage from his memoires in which he summerizes the reasons for such a "disaster." He writes that the Allied generals attached "too much importance...to a small piece of ground which was not to be lost at the peril of the honour of the battalion, regardless of its tactical importance." He also reads long passages from his recollections of the battles of Mount Sorrel and the offensive at Thiepval Ridge, which he considers "entirely successful." Again, reading his dramatic account of the battle of Hill 70, Clyne sums up by saying, "Although both sides had failed in their main attack, the 29th [battalion] had tested the strength of the enemy, and the Canadian Corps still held Hill 70."~Reading passages of his account of the assualt and capture of Iuwy, he recalls the anxiety of the villagers over the fate of their homes. He also remembers Armistice Day and Belgian civilians shouting "Vive les anglais" and "Vive les pomme de terres" which they nicknamed their Canadian liberators. He closes the interview with a description of his experiences with the Occupation Army in Germany.
